What is surface pattern design? Think of walking through a store and seeing fun graphics and patterns on notebooks, pencils, towels, napkins, clothes, and well… basically anything! Those patterns were all created by a designer.

This year I’ve spent my time working through several courses online learning how to create repeating patterns. Also immersing myself into the surface pattern design community and my only negative is that I didn’t find all this earlier! It’s been a lot of fun to get back into the art world.

I’m often inspired by what is around me. Patterns become very personal as each one starts from a real-life idea or experience. A doodle in my notebook curled up on the couch. Something my family and I saw on a nature walk. A quick watercolor painting during a quiet morning. These small moments then morph into art, then digital art, and finally a pattern. Do you see a cicada wing below? My husband and I caught this at our sons baseball game, haha! I hope you enjoy a glimpse into my world.
